This week I got the opportunity to serve with a group of people from my church. We went to different places in Rockwall/Dallas and were able to serve a bunch of people in different areas. God really challenged me and I was able to grow and look past my own selfishness and serve the people who are really in need.
One of the days we went to Care Center Ministries and handed out boxes of food. We split up into groups and I was in the “mingling” group. I went in the waiting room and talked and played with kids. There was one little girl who stuck out to me. Her name was Giselle. After a few moments of coloring and small talk, I asked her what she wanted to be when she grew up. She replied, “an architect”. This amazed me. Giselle was only eight years old. It inspired me that this little girl who had grown up in poor conditions and had lived a poverty-stricken life had hope and belief that she was going to make something of herself. It struck me. I, having lived my whole life having everything I ever wanted pretty much handed to me, have never experience this kind of hope before. But this girl, who had practically nothing, had hope. She looked past her current situation, saw the light at the end of the tunnel, and believed in herself. The conversation was short, but inspiring. I left and when I returned she wasn’t there. But later she came to me and gave me a picture she had colored. This girl challenged me. God challenged me with just the few words exchanged between me and Giselle.
